John Woods, President

John is an experienced healthcare executive who joined the St. Joseph’s Health System partnerships in 1998 and has worked across the St. Joseph’s Health System care continuum with leadership roles in hospital, long-term care, and home care. John is an advocate for integrated care that is designed at the point of care and measured from the perspective of patients, clients, residents, and families. John’s empathetic and relationship-based leadership style, with a focus on results, mission, and strategy, has been a great value to the Health System.

John holds a Master of Arts, Management Studies from Canterbury Christ Church University as well as a Bachelor of Science, Physics from Queen Mary College, University of London. Additionally, John has completed the Advanced Health Leadership Program at the University of Toronto, Rotman School of Management, and the Executive Fellowship for Research Application. He is also a member of the Governing Council of the Catholic Health Alliance of Canada and Past Chair of the Catholic Health Association of Ontario.

Sean Doherty, Chair

Sean brings over 25 years of financial leadership across a wide variety of industries.  Most recently, Sean has led the finance teams in both large and small organizations, as well as private and public companies. He is a designated Canadian CPA.

Sean joined the St. Joseph’s Guelph Board of Trustees in 2022, and assumed the role of Chair in September 2024

Janice Kopinak

Janice Kopinak is a Global Health Consultant and holds undergraduate degrees in nursing, (Niagara College), the University of Guelph and graduate degrees in health science from McMaster  University and the University of Toronto. Janice sits on the University of Guelph Research Ethics Board, the Advisory Committee for Guelph Online News,  works on various committees of the Canadian Red Cross as a volunteer and on contract and continues to publish and carry out peer reviews for various journals

Janice worked internationally as senior management/health advisor in several developing countries (Africa, Asia, Balkans, Cuba). Other employment included public health, mental health and academia University of Toronto; Conestoga College Guelph; Red River Community College Manitoba; Auckland District Health Board New Zealand. Past Volunteer activities  include: Board Member Waterloo-Wellington Local Health Integration Network;  Guelph General Hospital Quality Committee; Canadian Association of International Professionals (Ethics Committee).

Al Van Leeuwen

Al Van Leeuwen is a seasoned senior leader with over 20 years of leadership experience, including the past decade as a senior executive. With nearly two decades in the healthcare sector, Al brings deep expertise in both operations and finance. He has been instrumental in transforming a local healthcare organization into a nationally recognized leader in mental health and addictions treatment. Al holds a Master of Business Administration from the University of Windsor and is a Chartered Professional Accountant.

Al has experience in governance in a health care setting being a past member, Board of Directors, past member of the Resource Committee and past Chair, Capital Projects Committee, at Cambridge Memorial Hospital.  He is also a past Board member and Treasurer for a community not-for-profit organization.  Al is highly driven by challenges, new learning opportunities and continuous improvement initiatives and has a passion for helping individuals and driving organizational results.

Sean Slater

Sean Slater was appointed President and CEO of Excellence Canada in July 2024. He brings more than 25 years of executive leadership experience spanning growth strategy, sales leadership, business development, and organizational transformation across the private, public, and not-for-profit sectors.
Prior to joining Excellence Canada, Sean held senior leadership roles at Homewood Health, Solareh, VPI Inc., and Ceridian Canada, where he led complex organizations through periods of growth, change, and innovation. His experience includes executive management, quality and process improvement, revenue generation, workplace health and wellness, treatment services, and technology-enabled health products and programs.

A transformative, purpose-driven leader, Sean is passionate about helping organizations achieve measurable results and sustain long-term success. He has collaborated with organizations of all sizes across the Canadian business landscape, building strong partnerships and high-performing teams.
Sean proudly serves on the boards of St. Joseph’s Health Centre in Guelph and the Mission to Seafarers of Southern Ontario.

Amy Sproule-Jones

Amy Sproule-Jones is an HR leader with over 20 years of expertise in labour relations and human resources in the hospital and not for profit sectors in Ontario. Amy is recognized as a strategic partner who is able to build and engage high quality teams in strategic human resources planning, process improvement, policy and HR service administration. Her experience in leading and participating in labour negotiations, at the local, regional, and provincial tables brings a unique employee relations perspective to the SJHC board. She is passionate about relationship and consensus building as demonstrated by her several certificates in conflict management, dispute resolution, and mediation, building from her Master’s degree in Industrial Relations from the University of Toronto.

Having served on other volunteer governance boards, including Habitat for Humanity Waterloo Region, Community Health Caring KW and the Volunteer Waterloo Region, Amy is excited to continue her commitment to servant leadership as a member with SJHCG’s board.

Gloria Ringwood

Gloria Ringwood is a visionary leader with extensive senior experience in the Ontario and British Columbia health care system.  Her experience spans teaching and community health care facilities providing services in Acute, Chronic, Long-Term Care, Mental Health and Rehab Medicine; Ministries  of Health; Public Health; LHINs, Ontario Health and other organizations.  Areas of expertise include corporate leadership, information and technology, change/transformation management and governance.

Currently the Chair of the Conestoga College Digital Health Information Professional Advisory Committee for the Bachelor Digital Health degree program and has held Board Director positions with Grand River Hospital, Leadership Waterloo, WWD Victorian Order of Nurses and Health Information Management Systems Society of Ontario. Gloria received education in health information management and business and holds designation as a certified health information management professional, CHIM.

Donna Serrati

Donna is a Professional Engineer with over 25 years of infrastructure delivery and project management experience. Donna worked for the Region of Waterloo for over 20 years where she led transformational projects in the municipal infrastructure and transportation spaces. Donna is currently working with Metrolinx as a Director with the Hamilton Light Rail Transit project. She brings a wealth of knowledge and diverse experience, spanning the gamut from strategic planning, engineering planning and design, budget and capital program development and asset management.

Donna has been a resident of Guelph since she graduated from the University of Guelph in 1995. She has held positions with several boards and committees, including as a member of Professional Engineers Ontario Technical Standards Committee and the Board of Asset Management Ontario. Donna is honoured to have this opportunity to give back to her community as a member of St. Joseph’s Health Centre Guelph’s Board.

John Fabiano

John Fabiano has a wealth of experience in managing complex and large-scale redevelopment projects for both the public and private sectors.  His background includes work on projects at University Health Network, St. Joseph’s Health System, Women’s College Hospital, Nova Scotia Health Authority, Cambridge Memorial Hospital and many others. John is currently the Director, Planning & Design, Redevelopment, for Windsor Regional Hospital. He is now leading the planning & design for the NWEACH (New Windsor Essex Acute Care Hospital) which is approximately 2 million square feet and expected to be completed in 2033.

Randal Durham

Randal Durham is a healthcare project manager and health informatics professional who brings over a decade of experience leading digital transformation initiatives in hospitals and health systems throughout the Caribbean and Canada. As a Sales Project Manager at Sectra, he collaborates with care teams across Ontario to design innovative health IT and medical imaging solutions that support better care delivery.

Rooted in a deep Catholic faith, Randal is guided by values of compassion, service, and community. His commitment to faith and equity shapes his approach to healthcare—seeing every project as an opportunity to serve with integrity and advance the dignity of each person.

He holds a Master of Science in Health Informatics and is a certified Project Management Professional (PMP). Randal is honoured to support the mission of St. Joseph’s Health Centre Guelph and looks forward to contributing to a culture of healing, inclusion, and hope.

Mike Bigelli

Mike Bigelli is an accomplished senior executive and certified project management professional with over three decades of leadership experience spanning the public and private sectors. Throughout his career, Michael has held senior roles overseeing the development, construction, and operations of major civic, recreational, and entertainment facilities across Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom.

Currently serving as Vice President and General Manager of CBS Stages Canada Co., Mike leads the design, construction, and day to day operations of film production studios in Toronto. His past leadership roles include senior project and operations management positions with WSP Canada, SNC-Lavalin, the Town of Milton, NuStadia Recreation, LEGOLAND, and the iconic SkyDome (now Rogers Centre). Mike’s proven track record in complex project execution, budget oversight, team development, and public-private stakeholder engagement make him a trusted and effective leader in mission-driven environments.

Mike holds a Bachelor of Physical and Health Education from the University of Toronto and a Masters Certificate in Project Management from the Schulich School of Business at York University. He brings to the Board a passion for innovation, a commitment to community service, and deep expertise in capital projects, organizational leadership, and facility operations.

He is passionate about community-building and brings strategic insight, operational expertise, and a commitment to service to the St. Joseph’s Board.

Melissa Skinner, VP Clinical Services and CNE

Melissa joined St. Joseph’s in September 2024 and recently held the Director, Clinical Services role. Melissa has made a positive impact on our organization in her short time with the Health Centre. She quickly demonstrated her people-centered approach and her strong commitment to high quality patient and family centered care.

Melissa brings great experience as a Vice President and CNE. Before working at SJHCG, Melissa was VP Patient Services and CNE at Guelph General Hospital and held the role of Director of Quality and Professional Practice and Infection Prevention and Control before that. In addition to her wealth of experience, Melissa holds a Master of Health Science Health Administration and a Master of Nursing from the University of Toronto.

Dr. Jennifer Caspers, Chief of Staff

Dr. Caspers joined St. Joseph’s Health Centre Guelph in January 2024, bringing with her a wealth of experience, foresight, inclusive leadership qualities and a proven track record of driving organizational excellence.

Dr. Caspers has been immersed in medicine for her entire life – she is the daughter of a physician and a midwife and is married to a veterinarian who is on the faculty of the Ontario Veterinary College; fittingly their daughter is a veterinarian.  Dr. Caspers pursued an undergraduate degree at the University of Guelph prior to undertaking postgraduate studies at the University of Western Ontario. She taught at both UWO and Laurentian Universities before realizing her future was in Medicine and completing undergraduate and postgraduate specialty training at McMaster University. Dr. Caspers has practiced almost her entire medical career in Guelph as part of the Family Practice and hospital communities.

She served as Chief of Staff at Guelph General Hospital between 2009 and 2023 and has achieved numerous awards throughout her career which include the Waterloo Regional Campus Dean’s Award for Excellence in Medical Education 2023 and the Hany Rafla Memorial Family Practice Award in recognition of her commitment to both her profession and her family. She is highly recognized for her achievements, volunteerism, activism and scholarship which reflect her positive impact on our healthcare system.

Her ultimate goal is to improve the care experience for all at SJHCG – patients, families, caregivers, volunteers, staff and physicians.
