Commitment to Indigenous Reconciliation

St. Joseph’s Health Centre Guelph is committed to working towards truth and reconciliation, and relationship building with our local Indigenous communities.

Territorial Acknowledgement

We would like to acknowledge that the land on which we gather is situated upon Treaty Land of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation of the Anishinaabek Peoples.

The territory is mutually covered by the Dish With One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant to peaceably share and care for the land and resources around the Great Lakes.

Today, these remain the home to many Indigenous people and we are grateful to have the opportunity to work in this community. We also acknowledge that the settler population has been able to benefit from this beautiful land.

Booking of Indigenous Space at the Health Centre

The Indigenous-led Community Space at St. Joseph’s Health Centre Guelph serves as a welcoming, multipurpose gathering and ceremonial space grounded in Indigenous teachings, healing, and connection.  It is a place for education and cultural learning, supporting Indigenous Community first as well as St. Joseph’s staff and community members through engagement sessions, in-services and reconciliation-focused initiatives.

The space reflects a Friendship Centre-style model, fostering partnerships with community organizations to offer a variety of culturally grounded and wellness-oriented services.  It honours the diversity of Indigenous Nations represented in Guelph (over 20) by creating a space where our diverse cultures and many languages, songs and teachings coexist.

Activities may include moon and staff teachings, storytelling, song learning, Native AA circles, feasts, ceremonies, spirit work and cultural gatherings such as receptions or healing circles.  The space is intergenerational, supporting babies, children, youth, adults, Elders and Older Adults alike.  It is a place for eating, praying, holding babies and connecting to spirit together.

Safety and inclusivity are guiding principles, ensuring it is a 2-Spirit LGBTQ+ and family-safe environment.  Designed with flexibility in mid, the space also features adaptable furnishings and makes use of both indoor and outdoor areas available to fully embrace the land and community it serves.
