Discontinuing Enhanced Masking Measures at SJHCG
March 7, 2024
Recent trends have shown continued decreases in community-level transmission of COVID-19, flu, and RSV, as well as decreases in outbreaks in Ontario’s long-term care homes. With a lower risk of severe illness and hospitalization among residents and increased vaccination rates, the Ministry of Long-Term Care (MLTC) has discontinued the temporary enhanced masking measures that were put into place in November 2023. Consequently, St. Joseph’s Health Centre Guelph (SJHCG) will adapt its policies to align with these new guidelines.
Effective immediately, masking in SJHCG non-outbreak neighbourhoods will no longer be mandatory for staff, visitors, or anyone else entering, unless otherwise indicated (for example, masks should be worn if visiting an outbreak neighbourhood or visiting an individual in additional IPAC precautions). This marks a shift from our previous policy, implemented on November 7, 2023, requiring masks in all clinical areas and during all forward-facing activities with prolonged contact.
Despite this change, it is imperative to follow IPAC best practices such as hand hygiene and proper PPE usage, our individual point of care risk assessments, and stay current on COVID-19, influenza, and any other recommended vaccinations. We ask that General visitors postpone all non-essential visits to residents within the outbreak area for the duration of any outbreak.
SJHCG remains committed to working in collaboration with our local Public Health unit, closely monitoring viral trends to make informed, evidence-based decisions to ensure the ongoing safety of all clients, staff, and visitors. We thank you for your patience, cooperation, and adherence to these guidelines as we continue to protect those we serve against respiratory and other infections.
