Top 10 Interview Tips

There are many resources to help job candidates prepare resumes and countless tips on how to do well in a job interview. These Top 10 Tips are designed to help you prepare for a job interview with us.

  1. Learn about working at St. Joseph's Health Centre Guelph. Explore our website.

  2. Find out about The St. Joseph's Health System. We are part of a six member system, check out that website.
  3. Expect a panel of interviewers. There are usually two or three people who conduct the job interview.
  4. Think about why you are the best person for the job. What is it about you, and the education and experience you have that makes you an appealing candidate? Think about how your strengths and skills 'fit' this job.
  5. Describe past experiences in terms of what you learned and accomplished, not just what you did. When citing past job experience, be specific and talk about the outcomes you achieved and how your own learning and development were enhanced.

  6. Structure your answers for maximum impact. Keep your responses concise and structured, based on the questions. Be prepared to answer what are called scenario-based or behavioural questions.
  7. Ask Questions. Don’t be shy to ask for clarification or jot down your own thoughts and make sure that you understand the question.
  8. Think outside the box. Don’t forget about your experiences that aren’t directly job-related. You may have served on a volunteer board, been elected to a student council, run a club, coached a team or contributed to your community in some other way. What did those experiences teach you?
  9. Be prepared and bring references with you. Use the names of current and former supervisors (individuals who are able to provide qualitative information about your employment history). You will be asked to complete a reference check consent form.
  10. Criminal Reference Check/Vulnerable Sector Check (CRC/VSC). Due to the vulnerable population we have here at St. Joseph's Health Centre all interview candidates will be asked in the interview if they have ever been committed of an offence for which they have not been pardoned.   If you are offered employment, it is a condition of employment that you will provide a satisfactory CRC/VSC that is not more than six months old prior to commencing employment.
